Set the Mind on the Spirit

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. (Romans 8:5-8)

For the first time this congregation has a theme to look at all year. In 2019, we will focus on setting our mind on the spirit. Big “S”, little “s”, does not matter. Big “S”: Focusing on the Spirit of God will produce His works in our life and we will glorify Him in all that we set out to do. Little “s”: Focusing on our spirit and ensuring that we are behaving as children of God will produce His works in our life. What does that mean for you?

There is a list of sermon topics on the bulletin board. Perhaps you would like to keep a copy on your fridge to plan your private studies? You can be prepared to defend your faith in case you happen to disagree with the preacher. Do you pick the songs? Now you can pick songs that keep with the theme of the day!

This tool is only as effective as you make it. What can you do with this information? As an example, maybe you have been talking with a friend about “the rapture”? Invite them to services on August 18th! Maybe you are more devious than that- Bring up the tree of life in conversation for the next two weeks and then tell them we just happen to be learning about it on February 24th!

Why Romans 8:6? Because, focusing on God is an important aspect of any Christian’s life. Is it part of yours? Well, for a year we will work on it. Will you work on your focus with us? Help me help you. Let’s set our mind on the things of the Spirit. What can we do for God today?
